Forty years ago this spring, Walter Murch (on far right in photo), Mark Berger, and Richard Beggs were mixing Apocalypse Now in a small studio on Pacific Avenue in San Francisco. The dark figure lurking on the far left is me. Though I had done lots of sound work before Apocalypse, it was the first film I was involved with. If as much energy and experimentation has ever been put into another film’s sound design and mix I’m not aware of it. Needless to say, that experience informed everything I’ve done since. Thanks to Walter and to all my other friends who worked on Apocalypse for starting my movie sound career in the best possible way. I loved every minute that I worked on it.

  1. Funny that is the first film I worked on as well. Recording and mixing the music at The Automatt.
